Meredith Diamond: Hero of the Year

On a hot Sunday last July, Fontana Beach in Lake Geneva was teeming with swimmers cooling off and enjoying the summer day.  Luckily for one man that day, lifeguard, Meredith Diamond was on high alert, scanning the waters and searching with an acute eye for any activity out of the ordinary.

The man was not thrashing about nor making any noise, when 17 year-old Meredith noticed something wasn’t quite right with the man who was out in the deep water among hundreds of other swimmers.  Quickly grabbing her rescue tube, she sprang from her tower and swam out.  Diamond reached the man just as he was going under.  Pulling the man more than twice her weight to the surface, she towed him 200 feet to shore.  Once on shore, and with rescue assistance on the scene, Diamond assumed leadership, helping the man until the rescue squad arrived.

Deeply grateful, the man who really thought he had taken his last breath, would just like to say thank you.
