For those businesses that have fewer than 6 employees who need training, we have the CBRF First Aid and Choking course available at our Milwaukee, Racine and Waukesha offices.

CBRF First Aid & Choking

This State of Wisconsin approved class includes all first aid components and procedures to alleviate choking needed by Community Based Residential Facility employees.

Set up onsite training

If you need First Aid and Choking training for your Community Based Residential Facility (CBRF), please use our contact us page to inquire about setting up a course. The American Red Cross is the sole provider of first aid training for CBRFs in Wisconsin, and our instructors are trained in all facets of worksite safety. We set a date and location for training that is convenient for you, maintain your records and remind you when it is time to recertify.

Full Service trainings are offered to groups of 6 participants or more. To set up a class, use our contact us form. A Red Cross staff member will reply to your inquiry shortly.

Become an instructor

Duration: 24 hours

Fee: $270.00 (Does not include $100 state registration fee)

Registration fee: All participants are required to bring $100 check or money order payable to "UW-Oshkosh" to the training. No credit cards or cash will be accepted.

Registered Nurses and American Heart Association Instructors may be eligible for an abbreviated course. To find out if you qualify, please contact us.

Purpose:

To train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross First Aid and Choking courses for employees of Community Based Residential Facilities (CBRFs).

Prerequisite:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Pass a precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher on each component and successfully demonstrating competency in the skills evaluation in accordance with the established skill standards.

Learning Objectives:

  • Demonstrate the characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative and role model.
  • Teach courses in a manner that helps participants stay engaged in the learning process.
  • Ensure participants' health and safety during training.
  • Demonstrate applicable first aid, CPR and AED skills at an appropriate level of performance.
  • Maintain and complete accurate records and reports.
  • Plan, organize and conduct the first aid, CPR and Choking courses in accordance with the requirements of the specific program they will be teaching, and evaluate participants.
  • Monitor participants' practice and provide corrective feedback and encouragement consistent with the critical skill performance steps.
  • Choose the appropriate course and materials to meet the specific training needs of participants or groups.

Instructor:

A currently authorized American Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid and CPR for the CBRF Instructor Trainer.

All course fees include:

Required instructor and participant materials.

Certification Requirements:

  • Successfully complete the pre-course session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  • Successfully complete class activities, including practice-teaching assignments.
  • Pass the instructor course final written exam with a score of at least 80 percent.

Certificate(s) Issued and Validity Period:

  • Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor - Authorization is for 2 calendar years. All authorizations expire on December 31 of each year. Initial authorization may be less or more time depending on when training is completed.

AP/Get supplies & forms

All instructors conducting trainings are required to be registered with the State through the Center for Career Development and Employability Training (CCDET) at UW Oshkosh.

Supplies

Each participant is required to have the following supplies:

  • First Aid Skill Card
  • Adult CPR/AED Skill Card
  • First Aid/CPR/AED Participant Booklet
  • Bandage Set
  • First Aid and Choking for CBRF Certificate
  • Authorized Provider Fee

The cost for supplies for each student is $24.74. Rental of the DVD will be assessed at $6.00 per class.

Note: “Librarying” materials is not allowed per the State of Wisconsin. Photocopying class materials is also prohibited.

Course Records

Instructors will be responsible for filing course records as required with both the Red Cross and the State of Wisconsin. Each facility or instructor will also be responsible for collecting and submitting the $25 fee required for State registration.
