American Red Cross teaches people of all ages and various abilities how to swim and be safe around the water. Our courses combine the best in swim instruction with a strong emphasis on drowning prevention and water safety. We also provide comprehensive training for lifeguards, instructors and aquatic facility management to help protect aquatic facility patrons. Become a Red Cross Lifeguard, Lifeguarding Instructor, or Water Safety Instructor

If you are looking for a fun and meaningful job that’s in high demand, Red Cross aquatics programs offer three distinct tracks.

  • If you are 15 years or older and a proficient swimmer, you can become trained as a professional lifeguard.
  • If you’re at least 16 years old, you can become an American Red Cross Water Safety instructor and teach children and adults to swim.
  • If you’re at least 17 years old and have a basic-level Lifeguarding certificate, you can become an American Red Cross Lifeguarding Instructor and teach others to become lifeguards.
