Instructor Training
Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor PDF Print E-mail

Duration:   24 hours

Fee:   $270.00 (Includes FIT)

Purpose:

To train instructor candidates to teach basic-level American Red Cross First Aid, CPR and AED courses for lay responders.

Prerequisite:

  • Minimum age of 16
  • Pass a precourse written exam with a score of 80 percent or higher on each component and successfully demonstrating competency in the skills evaluation in accordance with the established skill standards.

Learning Objectives:

  • Includes Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) Course 
  • Demonstrate the characteristics required of an American Red Cross representative and role model.
  • Teach courses in a manner that helps participants stay engaged in the learning process.
  • Ensure participants' health and safety during training.
  • Demonstrate applicable first aid, CPR and AED skills at an appropriate level of performance.
  • Maintain and complete accurate records and reports.
  • Plan, organize and conduct the first aid, CPR and AED courses in accordance with the requirements of the specific program they will be teaching, and evaluate participants.
  • Monitor participants' practice and provide corrective feedback and encouragement consistent with the critical skill performance steps.
  • Choose the appropriate course and materials to meet the specific training needs of participants or groups.

Length:  24 hours

Instructor:

A currently authorized American Red Cross Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor Trainer.

All course fees include:

Required instructor and participant materials.

Certification Requirements:

  • Successfully complete the pre-course session.
  • Attend and actively participate in all course sessions.
  • Successfully complete class activities, including practice-teaching assignments.
  • Pass the instructor course final written exam with a score of at least 80 percent.

Certificate(s) Issued and Validity Period:

  • Lay Responder First Aid and CPR/AED Instructor - Authorization is for 2 calendar years. All authorizations expire on December 31 of each year.  Initial authorization may be less or more time depending on when training is completed.

Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) PDF Print E-mail

Course Code:  3010

Purpose

To introduce instructor candidates to the history, structure and activities of the American Red Cross.  To prepare instructor candidates to teach American Red Cross specialty courses to diverse populations.  To introduce instructor candidates to the policies and procedures of the American Red Cross to ensure consistency, quality and appropriate training.

Prerequisites

None

Learning Objectives

  • Identify the lines of service in the American Red Cross in a matching exercise;
  • Describe the qualities or characteristics of American Red Cross heroes and relate them to the concepts of volunteerism and community involvement;
  • Identify key chapter priorities in a group exercise;
  • Identify appropriate teaching methods and facilitation skills used in American Red Cross courses through group discussion;
  • Describe ways an instructor can respond appropriately to individual and group learning needs in a small group activity;
  • Identify ways the American Red Cross ensures quality and consistency in course delivery in a small group activity;
  • Recognize standard processes in American Red Cross courses for assessing participant progress and providing feedback in a small group exercise;
  • Respond appropriately to a specific learner concern in a group exercise; and
  • Articulate how participants can serve their communities in a summarizing exercise.

Length

Approximately 5 hours (based on no more than 20 instructor candidates).

Instructor

An authorized American Red Cross instructor trainer and/or designated national instructor.

Certification Requirements

  • Attend all course sessions; and
  • Fully particate in all course activities and exercises.

Certificate Issued and Validity Period

Fundamentals of Instructor Training - An instructor candidate must complete an instructor specialty course within one year of completing Fundamentals of Instructor Training.  The certificate remains valid as long as an individual holds a current national or nationally approved American Red Cross instructor authorization.

Babysitter's Training Instructor PDF Print E-mail

Purpose

To train instructor candidates to teach the American Red Cross Babysitter's Training course.  This course prepares instructor candidates to use course materials, conduct training sessions and evaluate the progress of participants in a basic-level course.

Prerequisites

  • Be at least 17 years of age on or before the last scheduled session of the course
  • Hold a current Fundamentals of Instructor Training (FIT) certificate issued within the past year or be a currently authorized Red Cross instructor in a Health and Safety Services program
  • Pass the precourse exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent (20 correct answers out of 25 questions)
  • Successfully perform all skills in the precourse session

Learning Objectives

  • Be familiar with the American Red Cross Babysitter's Training (r.02) course materials
  • Be able to plan and conduct a Babysitter's Training course
  • Be able to effectively evaluate participants' progress in a basic-level course

Length

Approximately 9 1/2 hours.

Instructor

Currently authorized American Red Cross Babysitter's Training instructor trainers.

Certification Requirements

  • Attend and participate in all class sessions
  • Successfully complete one practice-teaching assignment
  • Pass the final written exam with a minimum grade of 80 percent (16 correct answers out of 20 questions)

Certificate Issued and Validity Period

Babysitter's Training Instructor Certificate - Authorization is valid for two calendar years.  All authorizations expire on December 31.
