Their trainings have been like clock work. Every year since 1999, the Masterson Company has contacted the American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin to set up regular Cardiopulmonary Resuscitation (CPR), First Aid and Automated External Defibrillator (AED) courses. Then, in 2007, Masterson Company made a new request. They wanted an assessment for their team that went beyond the scenarios offered in the CPR/First Aid/AED course. The result was a Safety Drill on June 2 conducted by four Red Cross instructors, with Masterson’s 45 Plant Emergency Team members running through three different scenarios: cardiac emergency, bleeding and treating a burn. The instructors and team then went through a critique of what the team did right, and what improvements should be made in the future. A few days later, Full Service Manager Carol Merrithew, who set up the drill, found out it wasn’t just the team that did well: “Hi Carol:WOW is all I can say! Our training session and your team of instructors were outstanding. We had lots of positive feedback from our employees on the practice drill scenarios. They rated it one of the best training sessions they have ever had. The instructor’s critique of each accident scenario was very professional and “right on.” The reinforcement at the accident site from the instructors, the small group team sessions after each scenario and the instructors’ overall critique of each accident scenario was what made it a huge success. I had every team member, including the members who had started at 10 p.m. the night before, who normally would be a bit sleepy-eyed and non-participative – attentive and listening to every word. Carol, thank you for hearing the idea out and stepping up to tackle the challenge in an unknown training area for Red Cross. You are truly a delight to work with. I could not have accomplished this without you or your team. I know this was a first for this type of training for Red Cross, but please seriously consider offering it to other employers. I know I will be calling you again to see what we can put together to reinforce my Plant Emergency Team’s skills.
