Scott Olsen, Racine

Valentine’s Day will never be the same for Scott Olsen, not after what happened on that day in 2007. On February 14, 2007 Scott Olsen saved a man’s life---he saved Macon Kidd.

It was a typical February day in Wisconsin – cold and snowing. Scott went into work, quickly starting up the snow blower to clear the lot. “I was out there maybe 10-15 minutes when I saw a group of people gathering across the street. I heard one of the people say, ‘No he just fell over.’

While Scott couldn’t see what was going on through the crowd, he knew something wasn’t right. He turned off the blower and headed toward the group where he saw Macon lying face down in the snow.

“I went right into auto pilot,” Scott explains. “I sent someone to call 911 while I went down to check for breathing and a pulse. My hands were so cold I couldn’t really feel anything. Truth is, I didn’t need to. It was pretty clear this guy was in trouble.”

Continuing with his training, Scott performed CPR on the man until paramedics arrived. Scott’s actions saved Macon’s life. “You never think you're going to be in a situation where you need to use your training,” reflects Scott. “But when you are, you can be sure you’re glad you know what to do.”
