2-1-1 @ IMPACT, Milwaukee

No one could argue that the services provided through Impact and hundreds of other social service agencies throughout Milwaukee County are invaluable to the people of southeastern Wisconsin. But those services are of no use if the people who need them do not know they exist or do not understand how to access the programs and services they need. For that reason, we honor 211 at Impact, the organization responsible for helping social service providers and those who need their services connect for the benefit of the community as a whole.

In 2007, project 211 Impact responded to more than 122,500 requests for assistance, eighty percent of those from women, many of whom have young children in the home. Organization leaders say the vast majority of that assistance involves helping people living in poverty access assistance to make ends meet.

“Milwaukee is ranked eighth nationally when it comes to the percentage of people living in poverty,” shared Bob Waite of 211. “We’re in worse shape than New Orleans. I just don’t think the average person realizes how bad it is here.”

As a recent recipient shared however, programs like 211 can make all the difference. “I spoke with [211 operator] and she gave me information that was so helpful. She was so nice and polite. I cannot express how she made me feel. Please let her know that she makes a difference.”
