The Fire Safety Alert Team educates people on how to keep their homes safe from fires. Fire Safety Alert Volunteers talk to people about fire safety, complete fire safety checklists, and test or replace smoke detectors and batteries when needed. This service is provided free of charge by the American Red Cross.

The proper use of smoke detectors is the most effective way to prevent fire fatalities. Smoke detectors are economical and easy to install; yet, many people do not have them in their homes. It's not unusual for people who do have smoke detectors to be too relaxed with the maintenance that keeps them working.

Fire Safety Alert was developed in response to a deadly Milwaukee fire that claimed the lives of 19 people. Seventeen of those individuals were children. The Mayor of Milwaukee called for a task force on fire prevention and asked for the help of the Red Cross.

Residents of Milwaukee aren't the only ones who benefit from this program, Fire Safety Alert Volunteers are rewarded by having the knowledge that they may have prevented a tragedy for a family.
