Six teenagers, one American Red Cross volunteer and a Milwaukee Fire Department Supervisor. They were a group with a common goal: to spread the word about preventing, preparing for and staying safe to residents in a neighborhood struck recently by the most common disaster in the United States, home fires. They accomplished that goal on August 3, 4 and 5 on Congress Street, distributing more than 3,500 Fire Safety Door Hangtags and talking to residents about smoke alarms and fire safety. The project was the result of an annual partnership between the Red Cross and the Milwaukee Fire Department, who join together to give Summer Youth Internship Program (SYIP) teens the chance to work in their community. If you would like to get involved in preparing residents in your area for a fire, contact us. In just a few hours, you can make a lasting impact on your community and share some very valuable information. Or take a few minutes to prepare your family with our fire safety tips today! The American Red Cross in Southeastern Wisconsin relies on donations of time and money so they can provide relief to victims of disasters and help people prevent, prepare for and respond to emergencies in Dodge, Kenosha, Milwaukee, Ozaukee, Racine, Walworth and Waukesha counties. To donate your time, please visit our Volunteer page. Financial donations can be made online through our secure contribution site.
