Since the moment devastating tremors shook the ground in Haiti, the amount of relief provided by the American Red Cross and support from the American people for their Haitian neighbors have been overwhelming. With more than $200 million dollars contributed by our generous donors, the Red Cross has sent more than 900 volunteers to Haiti since the earthquake to distribute items and restore basic services destroyed on January 12.

Numbers so far

Red Cross is working to make sure that they address the short and long-term needs of the Haitian people, as their work so far has shown:

  • Handed out tarps, tents and toolkits for nearly 373,000 people.
  • Provided relief items for 400,000 people.
  • Distributed 60 million liters of clean drinking water.
  • Built more than 1,300 latrines.
  • Helped vaccinate more than 152,000 people against deadly diseases.
  • Coordinated the shipment of more than 2,100 units of blood to medical facilities.
  • Treated more than 86,000 people at Red Cross hospitals or mobile clinics.
  • Registered more than 28,400 people with missing loved ones on its family linking Web site.

Our Response

With such a large number of dollars and emotional investment in the response, many in the public have asked questions as they strive to understand the Red Cross response in Haiti. The Red Cross has responded with educational videos on YouTube explaining the procedures surrounding the relief efforts and how our personnel are carrying out the huge response.

Red Cross has partnered with numerous agencies to ensure that every donor dollar is used wisely and efficiently, and expects to be a part of the recovery of the Haitian people for many years. Red Cross launched a similar long-term recovery effort after a tsunami destroyed the homes of millions in 2004.
