Larry Ammel

For Larry Ammel, retirement provided a perfect opportunity to continue his involvement in the community. A high school music teacher for 31 years, Larry has always enjoyed giving his time and efforts to bring music and drama to Kewaskum.

Three years ago, Larry spearheaded an effort to furnish the interior of the high school’s new auditorium. His committee brought in more than $150,000 to be used for the project. He also played a part in starting a Kewaskum Area Arts Council, an organization that searches for sponsors and grant to bring theatre and music to the area.

“We are trying to make the arts a strong part of our community,” he says.

Larry plays in the Kewaskum Big Band, which he formed with other area musicians. Larry not only plays trombone, but also gets music for the group and coordinates their gigs.

“I don’t have time to be bored,” he says.

He is past President and Lieutenant Governor and the present Secretary of the local Kiwanis Club. His involvement in Kiwanis played a part in bringing the Missoula Children’s Theatre to Kewaskum. Every year, more than 300 local kids act and participate in a musical that is coordinated by the Theatre’s directors. The directors supply the props, makeup and other necessary supplies. In turn, the kids receive an intense education about how to act and put on a musical.

Larry is involved in more clubs and projects throughout the area, and is still very involved in the same high school he put his heart and soul into for many years. He does it all with a bounce in his step.

“I have always said and still mean, I am so lucky to have fun at what I do,” he says with a smile.
